Disaster finally strikes close to home

Cindy's elderly parents (her Dad turns 91 this year) were fine on Saturday morning when I finally was able to contact them. Our cell service and power were both completely knocked out by the recent storm this past Friday night and we were concerned about her folks, but it sounded like they were okay.

We didn't call them again until this past Monday morning and we kept getting odd messages throughout the day about being unable to complete the call. Finally, late Monday night we learned that shortly after I had spoken to them on Saturday, a tree had completed its fall and taken out their power, phone and landed on their house. They had been without water, refrigeration, air conditioning, etc. for the prior three days. In 95+ degree heat with high humidity.

That's all we had to hear and we left early on Tuesday morning on a rescue mission -- the car was filled with power cables, water, ice, gas, a generator, etc.

When we arrived, the damage didn't really look that bad... at first.

Then we discovered the hole...

There was also damage to one of the nearby trees; it looked like a micro-cell had struck, as there was a deadfall hanging in place, just waiting to fatally land on someone.

We got the hole temporarily patched up and the insurance agency called to get the claims process in motion.  We did a bunch of other things as well, but suffice to say they were in much better shape by the time we left.

Cindy's brother and his family come into town next Monday on previously scheduled visit, so they'll be able to see what else the in-laws need assistance with.  We were just glad that the damage wasn't worse and that no one got injured.
