The day was really getting long at this point and we decided we were going on just one last boat before calling it a day. Since we had just disembarked from it, Cindy wanted to compare the Passport 615 against the Hylas 70, which was also at Annapolis this year. So that's what we closed the show with. The Hylas 70 goes for $2.45M.
So what is our take on the Hylas, Oyster, Passport debate? From everything we looked at, my gut feeling is that Passport takes line honors across the entire range, though it's very close and may be an issue for some as to what is offered as an option.
How does the Hylas 70 ($2.45M) compare against the Gunboat 66 (2.95M)? Different strokes for different folks. The Gunboat is less than half the weight of the Hylas and just a fraction of the draft, but it has about equal the sail area when going upwind and double the sail area when going downwind.
For me the real question would be more along the lines of which would I choose -- a Passport 470 versus a Gunboat 55 or 60? And of those boats, I honestly couldn't say which one I'd pick without spending a lot of time out on the water with each of them.
