California's North Coast -- Day 1

We blasted out of the DC area a week ago, to join my sister and Dad in San Francisco for a tour of the California North Coast.  They had driven up from southern Los Angeles the day before and were waiting for us to arrive at the airport -- which we did... a full hour early!

From there we headed straight to Fisherman's Wharf for lunch at one of the classic tourist foodie dives, Sabella & La Torre.  We've all eaten there before, but the reason we keep coming back is for the food... one dish in particular.

And what did we have as our meal?  Their signature dish, cioppino, which is always delicious!

While wandering about, we tried to keep a weather eye open for anything related to the current America's Cup campaign, but all we saw remotely connected to it was the black hulled sailboat (above) that had "USA" emblazoned on it's hull at the bow.

After lunch we drove through the dock and shore areas, but didn't catch any glimpse of the big America's Cup catamarans as we headed for points north.

The Golden Gate Bridge is always a favorite, though we didn't tarry around it for long.

We hustled out of San Francisco as the shadows were beginning to lengthen and turned in for the night at Petaluma.  We checked into the Motel 6 there and I don't know that we've ever stayed at a more wretched hive of scum and villainy, waking up around midnight to find a police sting happening directly outside of our motel room door (undercover and uniformed police arresting a john who didn't realize what was going on).

Note to self: avoid that Motel 6 like the plague in the future.
